Role Summary

The Senior Instructional Designer is a subject matter expert in designing lessons and leading development of eLearning and instructor-led training programs for the Airport Operations & Customer Service (AOCS) division at Alaska Airlines (AS) and Horizon Air (QX). As an individual contributor, this role exercises considerable judgment to write learning objectives and lead teams in using current instructional design techniques and strategies and provides recommendations and direction for instructional design, methodologies, content development, assessment, and evaluation.

Key Duties

  • With minimal direction from leadership, exercise considerable judgment to determine instructional needs, define the course requirements, and make effective recommendations for actions.

  • Influence cross-functionality and partner with stakeholders in the analysis of training requirements to establish training program roadmap and make recommendations on the training design.

  • Apply deep knowledge in instructional design techniques and methodologies to design interactive courseware and materials to ensure an effective learning experience for a variety of audiences.

  • Act as a subject matter expert in instructional design to perform and make recommendations on Job Task Analyses, Needs Assessments, Gap Analyses, and Root Cause Analyses.

  • Create course design documents, learning objectives, course content, scenarios, media scripts, practice activities, and post-tests.

  • Exercise considerable judgment to make decisions in course changes based on customer feedback and ensure training content and solutions result in satisfactory learning products.

  • Manage and/or oversee several projects at once to support the established development process and ensure instructional integrity.

  • Regularly receive project status reports from Instructional Designers and Associate Instructional Designers, speak to the status of projects assigned to these roles, and provide feedback to ensure project requirements, schedules, and methodology meet established outcomes.

  • Administer the testing of training for deployment and coordinate the upload of the content to the learning management system (LMS).

  • Allocate workload to team members and manage execution of on time task completion, anticipate problems or resolve quickly, and ensure team members are clear on project requirements and schedules.

  • Ensure consistent, reliable, and comprehensive training records are maintained.

  • Research cutting-edge and new industry technologies and methodologies to assist in the continued improvement of content development processes and standards, recommending changes required to match or surpass industry standards.

  • Guide and influence professional development of junior roles and administer onboarding of new team members.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 4 years of experience with adult learning principles in instructional design, training development, e-learning development, or related area.

  • Bachelor's degree with a focus in business administration, communications, human resources, education, or related discipline, or an additional two years of experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Experience with adult learning principles and understanding of diverse learning and thinking styles (e.g., generational, cultural, etc.).

  • Advanced experience with image/graphic creation and manipulation.

  • Ability to create compelling visual designs for training that is functional and engaging.

  • Experience with authoring tools, such as Articulate 360, and design tools from Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop and Illustrator).

  • Experience analyzing instructional needs, defining course requirements, managing a project through the development process, and ensuring instructional integrity.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation) and proven success driving measurable results to enhance both stakeholder and employee satisfaction.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to address multiple projects and tasks while adhering to project schedules and deadlines and to effectively cope with conflicts caused by competing priorities.

  • Ability to work cross-divisionally and promote collaborative working relationships to accomplish training objectives.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Experience working with learning management systems such as Cornerstone.

  • Experience developing company-wide trainings.

  • A professional certificate in Instructional Design or a related discipline. Multiple related professional certificates will be considered accordingly.

Salary Range

$82,950 -- $124,450 / year

Salary Details

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
