Role Summary

The Senior Engineer - Powerplant (AOG) is a subject matter expert on the CFM56-7B, LEAP-1B, and GEnx-1B aircraft engines. As an individual contributor, this role exercises considerable judgment on delivering rapid and effective engineering solutions for Aircraft on Ground (AOG) scenarios and proactively mitigating potential operational disruptions. This role provides exceptional customer service by prioritizing safety, compliance, and operational excellence, and plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and operational readiness of Alaska Airlines’ fleet.

Key Duties

  • Act as a subject matter expert providing the Maintenance and Technical Services teams with troubleshooting solutions for systemic or chronic powerplant issues, effectively minimizing unscheduled maintenance downtime with minimal supervision.

  • Independently manages the Alaska ETOPS and APU on-demand programs, ensuring seamless operation within the team.

  • Makes recommendations to and works independently within the team to contribute to the Engine Condition Monitoring Program.

  • Reviews all relevant original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations, including Service Bulletins (SBs), Service Letters (SLs), and similar documentation, for applicability to the fleet.

  • With minimal direction from leadership, exercise considerable judgement authoring Engineering Control (EC) documents—including engineering orders, fleet campaigns, and authorizations—to manage the incorporation of modifications, improvements, and the disposition of line troubleshooting and shop requests.

  • Collaborates with Fleet Powerplant Engineers to lead cross-functional teams—including records, planning, line maintenance, engine build-up shop, quality control, flight operations, and technical publications—to ensure the seamless and efficient implementation of released Engineering Change (EC) documents.

  • Leverages all available resources, including Alaska Airlines operational data, OEM engineering information, and insights from other operators, to continuously enhance the safety and efficiency of the installed powerplants.

  • Develops AS-specific engineering data for inclusion in Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICAs), ensuring configuration control and defining required maintenance actions with minimal supervision.

  • Actively supports the reliability program by gaining expertise in powerplant and fleet initiatives and collaborating closely with powerplant fleet engineers to drive reliability improvements.

  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, off-hours and rotating shifts.

  • Must be willing to infrequently travel to support AOG aircraft and technicians.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • A minimum of 4 years of Powerplant Engineering experience, or related area (e.g. airlines, OEM, and/or engine shop).

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering; or an additional 2 years of relevant experience in aircraft engine maintenance or technical training such as an A&P license or aviation management in lieu of this degree.

  • Understanding of Gas Turbine fundamental operating principles (aero, thermal, mechanical, etc.).

  • Advanced knowledge of Powerplant Systems

  • Ability to cut through complexity and ambiguity, prioritize effectively, set clear goals, and operate in an agile fashion.

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, with the ability to present data and conclusions in an organized, concise manner at all levels throughout the company.

  • Detailed oriented and highly organized in a fast-paced environment.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Competency with TRAX software.

  • Subject matter expertise with one or more of the following aircraft engines: CFM56-7B, LEAP-1B, GEnx-1B.

Airport SIDA Badge Requirements

Salary Range

$112,000 - $168,000 / year

Salary Details

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
