Role Summary
The Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) Specialist II supports the ASAP programs at Alaska Airlines (AS), Horizon Airlines (QX), and Hawaiian Airlines (HA). This position is instrumental in promoting a culture of continuous safety improvement and risk reduction across the organization.
Key Duties
In the entry level (P1):
Helps facilitates ASAP program, Event Review Committee (ERC) meetings, report processing, action item tracking, and communication.
Provides input on program requirements and procedures based on FAA guidelines.
Provide back up to leading the ERC to consensus as necessary.
Maintains good working relationships within the company, the FAA, and with union representatives.
Promotes SMS by facilitating the development of tools and techniques that strengthen safety assurance and safety risk management.
Under the direction of the ASAP Manager, identifies ineffective risk controls, new hazards, process and procedure changes, and other required SRM triggers.
Emulates the safety team key competencies: safety advocacy, professional curiosity, analytical approach, personal accountability for results, credibility with peers, subordinates and leaders, and thoughtful and effective communication skills.
Performs continuous analysis of ASAP data to identify trends, safety concerns, and effectiveness of safety risk controls.
Helps support the tracking, analyzing, and communicating ASAP metrics.
Prepares analyses of ASAP reports and advises the Event Review Committee (ERC) of safety trends for use in corrective action recommendations.
In the intermediate level (P2):
Facilitates ASAP program, Event Review Committee (ERC) meetings, report processing, action item tracking, and communication.
Provides subject matter expertise on program requirements and procedures based on FAA guidelines.
Leads the ERC to consensus as necessary.
Interfaces with all levels of management, including presenting at monthly Vice President safety meetings.
Maintains good working relationships within AAG, the FAA, and with union representatives.
Promotes SMS by facilitating the development of tools and techniques that strengthen safety assurance and safety risk management.
Performs assessments to help identify ineffective risk controls, new hazards, process and procedure changes, and other required SRM triggers within the AAG SMS.
Emulates the safety team key competencies: safety advocacy, professional curiosity, analytical approach, personal accountability for results, credibility with peers, subordinates and leaders, and thoughtful and effective communication skills.
Performs continuous analysis of ASAP data to identify trends, safety concerns, and effectiveness of safety risk controls.
Serves as the primary focal for tracking, analyzing, and communicating ASAP metrics.
Prepares analyses of ASAP reports and advises the Event Review Committee (ERC) of safety trends for use in corrective action recommendations.
Attends cross-divisional working groups on behalf of the ERC to present deidentified ASAP data ensuring a holistic SMS view.
Conducts training for new ERC members and participates in awareness campaigns for frontline employees.
In the senior level (P3):
Facilitates ASAP program, Event Review Committee (ERC) meetings, report processing, action item tracking, and communication.
Acts as a subject matter expertise on program requirements and procedures based on FAA guidelines.
Leads the ERC to consensus as necessary.
Interfaces with all levels of management, including presenting at monthly Vice President safety meetings.
Maintains good working relationships within AAG, the FAA, and with union representatives.
Promotes SMS by facilitating the development of tools and techniques that strengthen safety assurance and safety risk management.
Leads assessments and identifies SRM triggers in coordination with the SMS Safety Program Manager.
Sets an example for the safety team key competencies: safety advocacy, professional curiosity, analytical approach, personal accountability for results, credibility with peers, subordinates & leaders, and thoughtful and effective communication skills.
Leads efforts for continuous analysis of ASAP data to identify trends, safety concerns, and effectiveness of safety risk controls.
Serves as the primary focal for tracking, analyzing, and communicating ASAP metrics.
Prepares analyses of ASAP reports and advises the Event Review Committee (ERC) of safety trends for use in corrective action recommendations.
Coordinates and facilitates training for new ERC members and participates in awareness campaigns for frontline employees.
Provides training and guidance to team members, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their roles effectively and efficiently.
Tracks program metrics and milestones, such as newsletter publication, annual reviews for their respective programs, etc.
Acts as ASAP subject matter expert in cross-divisional working groups on behalf of the ERC to present deidentified ASAP data ensuring a holistic SMS view.
Serves as the primary focal for making revisions and updates to the ASAP Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
Works with the Safety team to maintain a culture of continuous ASAP improvement.
Acts on behalf of the ASAP Manager as required.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required All:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum age of 18.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening).
Entry Level (P1):
- Bachelor’s degree in Aviation, Safety, or related field or 2 years of relevant training experience in lieu of this degree.
Intermediate Level (P2):
2 years of aviation experience in any of the following areas: aviation safety, or airline operations.
Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Aviation/Safety or related field or an additional two years relevant experience in lieu of this degree.
Detailed oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical skills.
Able to balance competing demands while producing quality results in an ever-evolving environment.
Ability to lead weekly meetings which include members from the FAA, union(s), and company managers or directors.
Senior Level (P3):
4 years of experience in Aviation Safety Action Program, safety, or related field.
Bachelor’s degree, with a focus in aviation/safety or a related discipline or an additional two years of relevant experience/training in lieu of this degree.
Lead regular meetings which include members from the FAA, union(s), and company managers or directors.
Subject matter expertise on the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) as detailed in FAA Advisory Circular 120-66, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and other FAA guidance.
Advanced knowledge of how each division ERC operates and ability to facilitate any ERC and interface with all divisions and leaders.
Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening).
Detail oriented and highly organized, with ability to work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of safety reporting in general and Safety Management System (SMS).
Strong analytical skills.
Able to balance competing demands while producing quality results in an ever-changing environment.
Preferred
Knowledge, training, or experience in one or more groups covered by ASAP: Pilot, Flight Attendant, Dispatcher, Ground, Mechanic, or ASAP experience.
Knowledge of the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) as detailed in FAA Advisory Circular 120-66, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and other FAA guidance.
Knowledge of safety reporting in general and Safety Management System (SMS).
Proficiency using the following AAG databases: JCTE Crew scheduling, FOGS, TRAX, EtQ, or Intelex.
FAA certificated airman or military equivalent preferred – private pilot license, commercial/ATP, airframe/mechanic, dispatcher, etc.
Statistical analysis experience and skills.

Salary Range
$62,250--$142,600 / year
Pay Details
Entry level: $62,250 - $87,150
Intermediate level: $74,400 - $111,600
Senior level: $95,000 - $142,600
Salary Details
Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
