Role Summary

The Manager Crew Operations Planning is responsible for executing on the strategy for crew bidding systems, administration and awarding at Alaska Airlines. As a people leader, this role leads and establishes priorities for the team of Crew Planners to execute the bidding and awarding process for both Pilots and Flight Attendants per applicable collective bargaining agreement and provides expertise for future contract negotiations at Alaska Airlines.

Key Duties

  • Lead a team of planners that execute all aspects of the bidding and awarding process for both Pilots and Flight Attendants while meeting all Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR), safety parameters, and contractual (i.e., collective bargaining agreement (CBA)) requirements.

  • Responsible for balancing costs, productivity, crew preference, operational reliability, and staffing constraints.

  • Influence across the company to improve processes that impact Crew Planning bidding and/or awarding.

  • Contribute to the future strategy for contract negotiations and the development and changes of all bidding and awarding-related language.

  • Oversee crew bidding systems, administration, awarding, and upkeep including execution of Pilot Step Trades and construction of Pilot Open Flying/Reserve lines.

  • Drives synergies and benchmarks successes between Flight Attendant and Pilot bidding processes to improve productivity and implement process improvement.

  • Analyzes schedules to identify cost drivers and inefficiencies. Partners with Finance in the development of budgets, variance analysis, and continuous improvement of key performance indicators.

  • Implements pairing building rules and parameter changes to improve cost and efficiency.

  • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, growing and developing the team for capacity and growth, looking at performance across the team, and time management.

  • Shapes culture of team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills


  • 5 years of Crew Planner or other relevant experience

  • 2 years of leadership experience.

  • A Bachelor degree with a focus in Business or other related field; or an additional two years of training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), including the use of Excel pivot tables, graphs, and functions.

  • Proven knowledge of productivity drivers and analysis.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to keep track of many moving parts and to identify conflicts early.

  • Ability to challenge the status quo and to constantly seek improvement.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


  • 3 years staffing and productivity experience.

  • Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Brio or Tableau.
