Role Summary

The Flight Operations & NOC System Support Manager is the subject matter expert in Alaska Air Group (AAG) strategy for Network Operations Control (NOC) and Flight Operations technology applications and infrastructure. As an individual contributor, this role defines long-term strategy and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to support development, testing, deployment, project support, and oversight of the division’s long term roadmap to ensure business goals are met for safety, compliance, cost, and operational excellence.

Key Duties

  • Acts as lead subject matter expert to support of Flight Operations written applications, providing Tier 0 support for all SOC/Flight Operations applications.

  • Assists IT with Severity 1 system issues for all SOC/Flight Operations applications.

  • Evaluates proposed software modifications to determine the impact on existing operational controls and associated interfaces.

  • Serves as the Sabre Flight Plan Manager (FPM) Administrator and efficiently maintains FPM’s route, Standard Instrument Departure (SID), Standard Instrument Arrival (STAR), and airport nav-data databases.

  • Provides subject matter expertise for Alaska Airlines (AS) legacy Visops operational software system and database.

  • Supports the Manager, Dispatch & Meteorology by working across departments and with outside vendors to manage dispatch related components (e.g., IT, Flight Operations Engineering, FPM, Flight Explorer, Schneider Electric, Jeppesen e-link, AeroData, etc.).

  • Maintains in-depth and thorough knowledge of all operations specifications, manuals, and AAG policies and procedures.

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of Air Traffic Control (ATC) procedures and traffic initiatives within National Air Space (NAS) and the impact on airline operations.

  • Stays up to date on changes to software control, including best practices and regulatory compliance.

  • Recommends systems/service for SOC, capitalizing on strategies of common AAG systems, system consolidation, simplification, and minimal customization.

  • Recommends systems and/or services and operational approaches to increase efficiencies, operational flexibility, and productivity with the SOC.

  • Coordinates on-going support and enhancements to SOC and Flight Operations technology.

  • Assists in writing and issuing technical policies and procedures operations bulletins and read-files.

  • In concert with Manager, SOC & Flight Operations Systems Support, partners with IT, SOC, Flight Operations, and other key stakeholders to develop and maintain the long-term SOC technology roadmap.

  • Influences and maintains software test and release standards.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills


  • 7 years of experience with IT systems, as a pilot or dispatcher, in airline flight operations systems or related area.

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science of related area, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • FAA Aircraft Dispatcher or Air Transport Pilot Certification.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of flight operations and Federal Air Regulations (FAR).

  • Strong ability to rapidly understand and organize complexity; comes up to speed quickly on the architecture and use of complex technical systems, applications and processes.

  • Strong familiarity with flight operation information technologies with proven ability to partner with software engineering teams.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to clearly communicate information technology concepts to executive level management in non-IT terms.

  • Demonstrated excellence developing and executing long-term, strategic efforts.

  • Experience managing technical infrastructures including SABRE and/or Visops and databases.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).

  • Ability to manage change and work effectively in a cross-functional team.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


  • Deep working knowledge of information technology concepts.

  • High-level programming language experience.
