Role Specific Details

This position will provide tax-related information and analysis for financial reporting, including U.S. GAAP tax provisions (ASC 740) and support the annual tax provision process.

Work closely with internal teams to address tax issues related to modeling, cash management, and optimizing effective tax rate (ETR).

Knowledge of global taxation is a plus.

Role Summary

The Manager Tax is responsible for executing on the strategy for projects associated with the maintenance of direct tax records as well as the preparation of the company’s tax returns and related reports at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

As a people leader, the Manager Tax establishes priorities and processes for the team of tax professionals.

Key Duties

  • Execute strategy for tax planning for all necessary company tax returns and cash flows, federal and state income tax planning related reporting.

  • Facilitate and manage complex projects associated with the maintenance of tax records and the review of specifically assigned tax returns and related reports.

  • Oversee and make decisions related to accurate, timely filing of federal and state income tax payments and returns in compliance with tax laws, as well as proper documentation of files and to ensure that all issues have been researched and documented.

  • Review of financial accounting and reporting of taxes to ensure proper documentation and compliance with GAAP, upkeep of SOX documentation, and maintenance of controls for assigned areas.

  • Lead team and establish priorities of tax professionals to deliver on business objectives.

  • Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, growing and developing the team for capacity and growth, looking at performance across the team, and time management.

  • Shape culture of team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors.

  • Establish and implement opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • 5 years of experience in a tax function.

  • 2 years of leadership experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in accounting or a business-related discipline, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Skilled at developing productive internal working relationships within finance and cross-divisionally, as well as relationships with various taxing authorities, other airline tax personnel, lobbyists and consultants.

  • Knowledge of federal and state income tax, and accounting for income taxes.

  • Outstanding communication (e.g., verbal, written, and listening) and presentation skills.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • A Master’s degree and a CPA.

  • International tax experience

Salary Range

$113,200 - $169,800 / year

Salary Details

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
